February Birthdays

Bassem Eid (February 5, 1958)

            Bassem Eid is a human rights activist and Israeli TV and radio analyst. Eid advocated against the Palestinian Authority for violating human rights and spoke out against the murder of Palestinian dissidents. In 1996, he founded the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group, an organization to monitor human rights violations by the Palestinian Authority. Eid was awarded the Association for Civil Rights in Israel in 1992 and the Robert S. Litvak Human Rights Memorial Award. In 2009, he was recognized as the leading Palestinian human rights activist.

Yelena Bonner (February 15, 1923 – June 18, 2011)

            Yelena Bonner was a human rights activist in the former Soviet Union. In the 1940s she aided political prisoners and their families. Bonner was active in the Soviet human rights movement and assisted in defending the Jews who were sentenced to death for the Dymshits-Kuznetsov aircraft hijacking in which 16 Soviets who were denied permission to emigrate highjacked a civilian aircraft. In addition, Bonner was one of the founding members of the human rights organization Moscow Helsinki Group in 1976. Bonner was awarded the Giuseppe Motta Medal and participated on the Board of the Advancing Human Rights (NGO), an international non-government organization for research and advocacy on human rights.

Daniel James Jr. (February 11, 1920- February 25, 1978)

            Daniel “Chappie” James Jr was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force and was the first African American to become a four-star general. James is also the third person of Sub-Saharan origin who became one of the highest-ranking officer in the western world. He has been awarded many honors such as, World War II Victory Medal, Legion of Merit, United Nations Service Medal, and many more.
