NEW BLACK CITY: A WORLD WITHOUT POLICE
MAY 13, 2021–JUNE 6, 2021
Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and the Museum of Social Justice partnered to curate an outdoor art exhibition. Black artists were invited to imagine a world without police. The exhibition documented the Black Lives Matter movement and illustrated what Los Angeles could be without policing and other carceral systems. The exhibition sought to amplify the movement’s policy demand: to reclaim the billions of dollars that systems of law enforcement drain from Black communities and invest those resources in community-driven, life-affirming systems of care and services that truly keep us safe.
Visitors were invited to contribute to the community altar, a sacred space for Black men, women, and children who have been killed while in police custody. Photos, candles, flowers, and/or other items of personal significance were added to the altar.
Additionally, visitors walked the black carpet and took a photo as they dreamed of a world where Black people can flourish.
Opening ceremony was held on Thursday, May 13 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. with Dr. Melina Abdullah and guests.
Closing ceremony was held on Sunday, June 6 from 12:00–3:00 p.m. with Dr. Melina Abdullah, Kym Foley, Staci Mitchell, Eugene Nova, the Holly Girlz, and Yazmin Monet-Watkins, and more.
Performances on the New Black City stage were livestreamed every weekend during the exhibition at www.blmla.org/newblackcity.
